Department of Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology was founded 2004 with the Institute of Applied Microbiology (IAM). Since its increption in 1945, the IAM has developed into a center of excellence for academic education and research in the field of biotechnology. In the search for innovative products, advanced processes, and sustainable technology, our research has been focussed on utilizising nature's biosynthetic potential by providing technological solutions and products from biopharmaceuticals to plant biotechnology and biological waste management. Our fields of competence include:

• Biopharmaceutical Technology
• Bioprocess Engineering
• Genetic Resources and Biodiversity of Plants, Fungi and Procaryotes
• Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology
• Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics

In 2005, the Department won a WWTF endowment, establishing the Chair of Bioinformatics (BI).
